Interim Superintendents Bid Farewell, Speak to Accomplishments

Where did we begin?
Last May 2016, Dr. Powell and I were hired by the Glenview Board of Education to be their interim superintendents. Since that day, we never looked back.  We certainly understood that it was important to ensure that this past school year was not going to be a status quo year.  We wanted to ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn and grow.
We began our tenure with the responsibility of hiring two retired Interim Director of Student Services and one Student Services Coordinator.  The previous director had resigned late in the year and we knew that it was important to not rush the hiring for the permanent director position. It was not a good time of the year to attract candidates. We interviewed approximately four candidates and hired Michael and Kathleen.  They have done an outstanding job ensuring that the needs of our children are addressed.  Thank you Michael and Kathleen.
We also needed to hire an Interim Student Services Coordinator.  We were very fortunate to fill that position with an experienced retired Coordinator.  We began the school year with six interim administrators that included one principal who was currently serving as an interim principal.  Although we had many retired interim administrators in the administrative positions, it was a very successful, seamless transition.
By late December, we needed to hire another interim retired principal to fill the position of a principal that left for personal reasons.  We hired two principals, one that was retired and one that was currently employed in the district in a non-administrative position.  Again, a seamless transition.
In addition to the interim positions that needed to be filled, we also had to fill a principal position to fill.  We were very successful in finding an experienced principal.
We began the school year with seven interim administrators and ended the school year with 8 interim administrators.
What did we achieve?
  • One of our most important responsibility included supporting the BOE search for a new superintendent.  The BOE was committed to hearing from all district stakeholders to inform this search process, and our Board did so by offering surveys and hosting community forms.  Many interviews occurred and as a result, the BOE hired Dr. Delli, an experienced superintendent, who is a collaborative leader that will make a positive difference in District 34
  • Additionally, the new teachers’ contract was approved and fully implemented.  At this Board meeting tonight, the GPA’s new contract was approved by the Board of Education.  There was a 98% staff approval rate.
  • As the summer progressed, we were asked by the BOE to review the advanced and accelerated math placement process and ensure that all children that could qualify would have the opportunity to do so.  Throughout July and August, student data was reviewed and it was determined that the placement process should be amended.  The standard was set too high.  This change allowed for more children to qualify for the advanced and accelerated math classes. We then formed a math task force that met several times to develop a new placement process.  This new placement process was fully implemented this year.
  • We developed a highly sophisticated system to track student progress
  • The SEL Curriculum was piloted this year with full implementation expected next year.
  • A new teacher evaluation system was implemented as required through PERA
  • Kindergarten Enhancement Plan was developed and will be fully implemented for the upcoming school year
  • During the summer, math common assessments will be completed for the middle school with the work continuing throughout the school year for grades K-6
  • A Parents in Partnership event was hosted
  • New positions were created utilizing existing funds in support of our neediest students
  • Four Block Schedule will be implemented for the upcoming year at our middle schools with a middle school task force addressing the charge to develop a new schedule
  • Text –A-Tip was implemented to ensure that our children have access to communicating anonymously
  • Next Generation Science standards were implemented
  • We partnered with the Village to mitigate flooding in the Bonnie Glen Neighborhood
  • Partnered with area school districts to have a common approach to winter weather closings
Most Importantly,
We have a new superintendent.
We have hired three new principals and a student services administrator.
New Math Placement Process is full implemented.
And very important there are no interims hired for the upcoming school year!!!
I would be remiss if I did not say that all of the work mentioned above could not have been accomplished within the support, hard work, knowledge, and experience of our administrative team and support staff. It is not easy having two bosses that share a position!!!   Working collaboratively with such a talented team and the dedication and support of the Board of Education members made such a difference.  The focus was always on what is best for our children.
Again, thank you for your support.  It has been an honor and a privilege to act as your interim superintendent.  It has been a productive year.  Thank you for the opportunity.  We know you are in good hands with Dr. Delli
